The Debian project starts voting on Stallman's position

On April 17th, preliminary discussion was concluded and a vote was launched to determine the official position of the Debian project regarding the return of Richard Stallman to the post of head of the Free Software Foundation. Voting will last two weeks, until April XNUMX.

Initially, the vote was initiated by Canonical employee Steve Langasek, who proposed the first version of the statement for ratification (calling for the resignation of the FSF board of directors and supporting an open letter against Stallman). However, in accordance with the public comment process, the Debian community representatives have proposed alternative versions of the statement:

  • Call for the resignation of only Stallman.
  • Limit interaction with the FSF while Stallman is in charge of the organization.
  • Call on the FSF to increase the transparency of governance processes (the initiative group that put forward this point claims to be β€œopaque” and ignoring community opinion when Stallman returns).
  • Support the return of Stallman and on behalf of the project sign an open letter in support of Stallman.
  • Strongly condemn the "witch hunt" carried out against Richard Stallman, the Board of Directors of the FSF and the entire organization as a whole.
  • Do not release any official statement regarding the Stallman and FSF situation.

In addition, it can be noted that the number of signatories of the letter in support of Stallman gained 5593 signatures, and the letter against Stallman was signed by 3012 people (someone withdrew their signature, as there were 3013 on Saturday morning).
