The NetBeans project became a Top-Level project in the Apache Foundation

After three releases in Apache Incubator, the Netbeans project has become a Top-Level project in the Apache Software Foundation.

In 2016, Oracle transferred the NetBeans project to ASF. According to the accepted procedure, all projects transferred to Apache first get into the Apache Incubator. During the time spent in the incubator, projects are brought into line with ASF standards. The licensed purity of the transferred intellectual property is also checked.

The latest release of Apache NetBeans 11.0 (incubating) took place on April 4, 2019. This was the third major release under the wing of ASF. In 2018, the project received the Duke's Choice Award.

The NetBeans project includes:

  • NetBeans IDE is a free integrated application development environment (IDE) for programming languages such as Java, Python, PHP, JavaScript, C, C++, Ada, and more.

  • NetBeans platform is a platform for developing modular, cross-platform Java applications. Projects based on the NetBeans platform: VisualVM, SweetHome3d, SNAP etc.
