The Python project intends to move bug tracking to GitHub

The Python Software Foundation, which oversees the development of a reference implementation of the Python programming language, presented plan to migrate CPython bug tracking infrastructure from bugs.python.org on GitHub. The code repositories were translated on GitHub as the primary platform back in 2017. GitLab was also considered as an option, but the decision in favor of GitHub was motivated by the fact that this service is more familiar to core developers, newcomers and third-party contributors.

Governing Council approved the carrying out migration. The participant survey phase has now begun, after which a final decision on switching to a new bug tracking system will be made on June 12. The transition will begin on June 22. The issue tracking systems for all other Python Software Foundation projects except CPython have already been moved to GitHub.

The currently used service is bugs.python.org, based on the platform Roundup, outdated, does not answer meets all the requirements of developers, significantly lags behind the GitHub Issue in functionality, takes up developers' time for maintenance, is tied to Mercurial, is unusual for beginners, does not support REST API for interaction with external systems, does not support continuous integration and bots, discloses user email addresses, has problems creating accounts. In addition, it may be noted that bugs.python.org, like bugs.php.net, is hosted on IP addresses falling within under blocking Roskomnadzor.
