The developers of the Thunderbird email client have published the financial report for 2022. During the year, the project received donations in the amount of $6.4 million ($2019 million was raised in 1.5, $2020 million in 2.3, and $2021 million in 2.8), which allows it to successfully develop independently.
The project's costs amounted to $3.569 million (2020: $1.5 million, 2021: $1.984 million) and almost all (79.8%) were related to staff salaries. Currently, 24 employees are working on the project (in 2020, 15 worked, in 2021 - 20). 6.9% was spent on administration and 0.3% on marketing. The remaining costs relate to professional services fees (such as HR), tax administration, and agreements with Mozilla (such as fees for access to assembly infrastructure).
According to available statistics, there are about 8-9 million active Thunderbird users per day and 17 million active users per month (a year ago there were about the same figures). 95% of users use Thunderbird on the Windows platform, 4% on macOS and 1% on Linux.
