Proton close to full support for 7000 Windows games

The Proton project, under which Valve is developing a Wine add-on to run Windows gaming applications on Linux and listed on the Steam catalog, has nearly reached 7 confirmed games with platinum support. For comparison, a year ago, this level of support covered about 5 games. The platinum level implies that the game fully works on Linux and does not require additional manipulations to run.

The total number of Windows games running through Proton is estimated at 13.7 thousand, and games that have not yet been launched - 3.5 thousand. Of the new games that appear, less than 20% fail to run using Proton. The number of games supported increases by about 100 every month. these games work just as well on Linux as they do on Windows.

The remaining half are launched, but with certain problems. Some of the most common problems include crashes when playing video intros, inability to play multiplayer due to incompatibility with anti-cheat systems, restrictions due to technical copyright protection (DRM), performance issues, insufficient support for DX12 in Proton.

Some games that have problems running in Proton can be successfully run in the Proton Experimental branch, as well as in a build of Proton GE maintained by independent enthusiasts, which features a more recent version of Wine, additional patches and the use of FFmpeg. In addition, work is underway to create a new runtime container for Linux - Soldier Linux (Steam Runtime 2).
