The gluttony of AI and data centers has forced US energy companies to reconsider their development plans in the coming years

US utilities forecast increased demand for electricity driven by explosive growth in the data center and generative AI markets. According to Datacenter Dynamics, many of the country's energy suppliers are now reconsidering capital expenditures in light of growing demand from data centers. Nine out of 10 U.S. utilities attribute customer growth and electricity demand to the data center industry, compared with only two that included likely data center growth in their forecasts last year, analysts told Reuters. The industry is expected to grow faster than in previous decades, Newton Investment Management said. And the growing demand for energy raises concerns that there simply won’t be enough generating capacity. Moreover, according to some experts, the growth in energy production is not keeping pace with the growth of data centers in general.
