Working with light and optics: how to start a career at a university - the experience of graduates of four specialized master's programs

Last time we talked about how to combine work and study graduates of the Faculty of Photonics and Optoinformatics. Today we continue the story, but this time we talked with masters representing such areas as “Light guide photonics","LED technologies and optoelectronics", and "Photonics materials" and "Laser technologies».

We discussed with them how and in what way the university helps in terms of starting a career in the profession.

Work in the laboratory of the university

ITMO University students who prove themselves during classes can get involved in various R&D projects. They are carried out by order of manufacturing enterprises of the country. Thus, undergraduates acquire real practical skills, learn to interact with employers who are specialized for themselves, and receive additional income during their studies.

I work as an engineer in the Laboratory for Assembly and Adjustment of Light Guide Photonics Devices at ITMO University's Light Guide Photonics Research Center. I participate in the development and testing of prototypes of light guide photonics devices. I am engaged in coaxial alignment of optical fibers.

I got a job at the beginning of the second year of the master's program at the suggestion of my supervisor. In my case, this played into the hands - you can work and learn new things at the same time.

Research conducted by students is supervised by leading scientists and specialists from specialized enterprises. A graduate of the program told us about his experience in the laboratory “LED technologies and optoelectronics» Artem Petrenko.

Since the fourth year of my bachelor's degree, I have been engaged in scientific activities in the laboratories of the university. Initially, it was laser processing of silicon, and already in the master's program I managed to connect to R&D and develop a laser module for additive technologies. This R&D became my main job for quite a long time, because the process of developing a real device is a very exciting experience.

At the moment, I am intensively preparing for the exams for admission to graduate school. I would like to try to realize myself in the scientific field.

— Artem Petrenko

Working within the walls of the university, it becomes easier for students to combine couples. Plus, it is easier to study when the work is directly related to the educational program, and scientific research flows smoothly into the final qualifying work. The educational process at the university is designed in such a way that students do not have to constantly be torn between work and study.

As Artem Akimov, a graduate of the master's programLaser technologies", even taking into account the absence of a certain number of classes"you can safely study on your own, achieve a loyal attitude of teachers and go through certification stages during the semester».

interviews in companies

The knowledge and experience gained in classes and in the laboratories of ITMO University helps to easily pass interviews for specialized vacancies and work in leading companies in the country. According to Ilya Krasavtsev, a graduate of the program “LED technologies and optoelectronics”, the university curriculum fully complies with the requirements of the employer. After the master's degree, Ilya managed to immediately take a leadership position. He works for SEAES, a company specializing in the production and sale of marine lighting. Another graduate of this program, Yevgeny Frolov, had a similar experience.

I am an engineer in a scientific laboratory for the development and production of fiber-optic gyroscopes at JSC Concern Central Research Institute Elektropribor. I am engaged in joining an optical fiber with a multifunctional integrated optical circuit made on a lithium neobate crystal. Successfully pass the interview allowed knowledge of the basics of fiber and integrated optics, as well as experience with optical fiber at the department light guide photonics.

— Evgeny Frolov, graduated from the master's program this year

Finding a job is also facilitated by the fact that directors and key employees of many enterprises personally give lectures at ITMO University. They talk about technological processes and equipment, share their experience.

For example, within the framework of the master's program "LED technologies and optoelectronics» specialized courses are taught by the leaders of LLC Hevel, which produces solar power plants, CJSC Semiconductor Devices, which manufactures lasers, and JSC INTER RAO LED Systems, which develop light-emitting diodes.

Everything that students hear in the classrooms from teachers, they will be able to see and thoroughly study in the workshops and laboratories of existing industries.

— Dmitry Bauman, Head of the Laboratory of the Faculty of Laser Photonics and Optoelectronics and Director for Research at JSC INTER RAO LED Systems

As a result, graduates of the master's program receive the competencies necessary for specialists in their profession. After employment, it remains only to quickly catch the main subtleties in business processes. There are no situations when a student is told that he can forget everything he was taught at the university.

The curriculum meets all the requirements that a modern employer imposes on an employee. At the university, you take an active part in research work, gain experience with laser installations and other modern experimental equipment, as well as the ability to work with engineering, graphics and computing programs: AutoCAD, KOMPAS, OPAL-PC, TracePro, Adobe Photoshop, CorelDRAW, Mathcad, StatGraphics Plus and others.

According to masters, the very status of an ITMO University graduate helps. As Ilya Krasavtsev says, at interviews he was often asked about teachers simply because employers knew them personally.

Contracts with foreign colleagues

A fairly large number of foreign organizations are familiar with our faculties and speak positively about our graduates and specialists.

I happened to work in a company that works closely with Siemens. The Siemens employees with whom I contacted treat our university with great respect, and they make quite serious demands on its graduates. Because the high status of the university should correspond to the high status of its graduates.

Many ITMO University students do internships abroad during their studies. After graduation, they receive offers of long-term cooperation from Russian and foreign employers.

The university is able to help not only with the acquisition of knowledge, but becomes a good platform for starting a career path. Faculty and staff at ITMO University work with students on all fronts — on theory and practice. Moreover, this practice is tied to real technological and business cases, which are being worked on by specialists from large companies around the world.

PS Reception on "Light guide photonics","LED technologies and optoelectronics", and "Photonics materials" and "Laser technologies» continues 5 to August.
