Working with Light in Unity's Impressive Tech Demo The Heretic

Featured a year ago The Heretic was one of the most impressive tech demos we've seen in a while. It's based on the Unity 2019.3 engine and shows what today's high-end PCs are capable of. Now the Unity Engine team has released a new video, using The Heretic as an example, to show how developers can manipulate the camera and various aspects of lighting in real time.

As a reminder, all of The Heretic's impressive effects and realistic environments ran in real time at 1400p/30fps on a modern consumer gaming PC last year. The short film was created by the same team that previously demonstrated the engine’s capabilities using an example Adam and Book of the Dead videos.

The Heretic uses a wide range of Unity graphics features, including every possible aspect of the High-Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP). The cinematic look was given to the demo using the latest version of Unity's post-processing features: motion blur, glow, depth of field, film grain, color gradation and Panini projection.

DSO Gaming asked Unity Engine if they planned to release this tech demo to the public, like Adam Tech previously released. Unfortunately, the team has no such plans yet. But interested developers can sign up for an online session, dedicated to The Heretic, which will take place on May 12. It will feature Unity Evangelist Ashley Alicea in conversation with Robert Cupish and Krasimir Nechevski from the Unity demo team. They will discuss work on the demo and answer questions from the community.
