Radeon VII is the fastest graphics card for Ethereum mining

The AMD video card has once again become the leader in the extraction of the Ethereum cryptocurrency. The flagship graphics accelerator Radeon VII was able to outperform the previous Vega-based graphics cards, the Radeon Pro Duo based on two Fiji GPUs, and even the previous leader, the Volta-based NVIDIA Titan V.

The Radeon VII video card out of the box, that is, without any modifications and changes, is capable of providing a production speed of 90 Mhash / s. This is almost three times more than the Radeon RX Vega 64 out of the box, and also 29% more than the Radeon Pro Duo provides. The difference with the Titan V is also significant - the NVIDIA graphics card is capable of providing a hash rate of 69 Mhash / s in a standard configuration.

With the help of various manipulations with the parameters, it is possible to increase the hash rate of the Radeon VII video card and even up to 100 Mhash / s. However, it would be better to reduce power consumption from 319 to 251 W, while overclocking the memory from 1000 to 1100 MHz, and forcing the GPU to work at 950 mV at a frequency of 1750 MHz. Under such conditions, the production rate will be 91 Mhash / s, and the efficiency will increase by 21%.

Of course, for other video cards, you can also achieve an increase in hashrate with the help of optimizations. For example, for Titan V, optimizations allow reaching the mark of 82 Mhash/s. In turn, the Radeon RX Vega 64 is capable of β€œmining ether” at a speed of 44 Mhash / s. It is also worth noting here that for NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1080 Ti video cards there are special software patches that provide a significant increase in hashrate to 40 and 50 Mhash, respectively, or even higher. This also reduces energy consumption.

Compared to the Titan V, the new Radeon VII has not only better performance, but also a much more attractive price - graphics cards cost $3000 and $700, respectively. In other graphics accelerators, Radeon VII wins in terms of performance and power consumption. For example, three Radeon RX 570s or RX 580s with a hash rate comparable to one Radeon VII will consume more power. In the case of the GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1080 Ti, the situation is similar: comparable performance is provided with more power consumption.

I would also like to dwell on where such a big difference between the Radeon RX Vega 64 and Radeon VII came from. It's all about memory and bandwidth. While the Radeon RX Vega 64 had 8GB HBM2 with 484GB/s bandwidth, the newer Radeon VII has 16GB HBM2 with 1TB/s bandwidth. At the same time, the power consumption of video cards is approximately at the same level, which makes Radeon VII a much more interesting solution for mining.

However, there is an obvious minus here: the profitability of mining is not at the highest level now, and even with such a high hash rate, it is unlikely that it will be possible to make a big profit using Radeon VII. Now, if this video card existed a year and a half ago ...
