Ransomware distributors threaten to publish stolen data

Positive Technologies unveiled detailed report, which examines current cyber threats and current trends in the world of online crime.

Ransomware distributors threaten to publish stolen data

In general, the cybersecurity situation is getting worse. So, in the last quarter of 2019, the number of unique incidents rose by 12% compared to the previous quarter. At the same time, the share of targeted attacks increased by 2%, reaching 67%.

Attackers continue to actively use programs that encrypt data on an infected computer. The share of such attacks in the total mass of malware infections was 36% for legal entities and 17% for individuals, compared to 27% and 7%, respectively, in the third quarter of 2019.

Moreover, cybercriminals are increasingly using a new blackmail tactic in response to victims' refusal to pay a ransom to decrypt files: attackers threaten to release the stolen data.

β€œWe attribute this to the fact that more and more organizations are making backups and not paying for decryption. Attackers have taken countermeasures and are now blackmailing victims with possible sanctions for the leakage of personal data, the handling of which is regulated by the General Data Protection Regulation, ”Positive Technologies notes.

The study also showed that a third of the information stolen from legal entities (32%) was payment card data, which is 25% more than in the third quarter.
