Debian Developers Approved the Possibility of Secret Voting

The results of the general resolution vote (GR, general resolution) of the Debian project developers involved in maintaining packages and maintaining the infrastructure, which approved the possibility of holding secret ballots that did not disclose the choice of participants (until now, after the GR vote, full lists were published with information about which options each voter chose). The need for secret ballots arose last year during the adoption of a resolution regarding Richard Stallman due to the fact that not everyone was ready to openly express their position, since expressing their opinion could lead to subsequent harassment by Stallman's supporters or opponents.

During the current vote, the possibility of depersonalizing the opinions of participants was approved (hiding information about who voted for what), but allowing for verification to exclude abuses in the counting of votes. Secret general ballots (GR) will be held similar to the annual elections of the project leader, they will also separately publish lists of participants who have taken part in voting and selected positions, without the ability to determine which participant belongs to one or another choice.

To exclude abuses on the part of the responsible person conducting the vote count, the possibility of independent re-verification of votes is determined, and developers are required to create a mechanism to confirm that their vote was taken into account when calculating the results (when choosing a project leader, a cryptographic hash is used, with which a participant can check including your vote, but this method is not protected from enumeration of values and requires modernization, for example, using hidden codes generated by the voting system for each developer when calculating the hash).
