LibreOffice developers intend to ship new releases labeled "Personal Edition"

The Document Foundation, which oversees the development of the free LibreOffice package, announced about upcoming changes regarding branding and positioning of the project in the market. Expected release of LibreOffice 7.0 in early August, currently available for testing in the form of a release candidate, they plan to distribute it as "LibreOffice Personal Edition". At the same time, the code and distribution conditions will remain the same, the office suite, as before, will be available without restrictions for free and to everyone without exception, including corporate users.

The addition of the "Personal Edition" label is intended to facilitate the promotion of additional commercial editions that may be offered by third parties. The essence of the initiative is to separate the current free LibreOffice, supported by the community, and products for enterprises created on its basis and additional services offered by third parties. As a result, it is planned to form an ecosystem of vendors offering commercial support services and LTS releases for companies in need of such a service. Commercial products will be delivered under the "LibreOffice Enterprise" line and offered on separate sites libreoffice.biz and libreoffice-ecosystem.biz.

The proposal to use the "Personal Edition" label has been tentatively agreed governing board during the discussion project development strategy for the next five years. This label was added to the recently released release candidate LibreOffice 7.0 and caused bewilderment in the community. To dispel possible speculation, the governing board issued a statement in which they assured that LibreOffice will always remain a free product with open source texts, an unchanged license and the ability to use all available functionality. Brand changes are associated only with the marketing promotion of the project. The final decision has not yet been approved and is at the draft stage, suggestions for improvement of which are accepted on the mailing list "board discussion«.
