Unity8 environment developed by UBports project renamed to Lomiri

Project ubports, who took over the development of the Ubuntu Touch mobile platform and the Unity8 desktop, after pulled back canonical company, объявил on the continuation of the development of the fork Unity8 under the new name Lomiri. The main reason for the renaming is the overlap of the name with the "Unity" game engine, which causes confusion among users who consider the projects related (for example, asking how to import 3D models and meshes into Unity8).

In addition, in the process create Unity8 packages for Debian and Fedora had issues with the use of the "ubuntu" trademark, which is used in the names of some Unity8 components (e.g. "ubuntu-ui-toolkit", "ubuntu-download-manager", "qtubuntu"). Debian and Fedora distributions cannot accept trademark infringing projects. Canonical Company does not allow use the word "ubuntu" in the names of third-party projects without explicit permission. Despite the fact that there were no claims against UBports from Canonical, the project decided to play it safe. After the renaming, the unity8 package will be called lomiri, ubuntu-ui-toolkit will be lomiri-ui-toolkit, and ubuntu-download-manager will be lomiri-download-manager. Ubuntu.Components QML components will be renamed to Lomiri.Components.

Lomiri is positioned as a universal user environment suitable for use on smartphones, tablets, laptops and PCs. The environment uses the Qt5 library and the Mir display server, which acts as a composite server based on Wayland. Combined with the UBports (Ubuntu Touch) mobile environment, the Lomiri desktop enables Convergence mode, which offers a responsive mobile environment that, when connected to a monitor, provides a full-fledged desktop and turns a smartphone or tablet into a portable workstation.
