RED OS 8

RED SOFT company has released a new version of the Linux distribution called RED OS 8.

Main features of the release:

  • The distribution is currently available for 64-bit x86-compatible processors.
  • The distribution includes the Linux kernel 6.6.6.
  • Graphical shells available are GNOME 44, KDE (Plasma 5.27), MATE 1.26, Cinnamon 4.8.1.
  • Unlike many distributions, different versions of the same software are available in the repository (in particular, both Python 2 and 3.11 are available; both OpenJDK 8 and 21).
  • A slightly less than five-year support period is planned (until 2028 inclusive).

The distribution is based on RPM format packages. According to the developers, RED OS is assembled from the source codes of Open Source projects and its own developments. Packages are assembled according to our own specifications or the specifications of Open Source projects. All specifications used are adapted to ensure compatibility with the RED OS package base. The development of RED OS is carried out in a closed loop of the RED SOFT company. Source codes and packages are located in RED OS's own repository, located in the Russian Federation.

Source codes and src.rpm packages are not publicly available.

Distribution is commercial, but is available for free use to individuals and legal entities. Legal entities, after completing β€œstudy and testing,” must purchase a license, as do users using the distribution for commercial purposes.

Instructions for upgrading from the previous version 7.3 are provided by RED SOFT only if you have purchased technical support.

The main users of RED OS are government agencies of the Russian Federation and state-owned companies. RED SOFT company since February 23, 2024 is under US sanctions.
