Release of WebKitGTK 2.26.0 browser engine and Epiphany 3.34 web browser

Submitted by release of a new stable branch WebKit GTK 2.26.0, browser engine port W for GTK platform. WebKitGTK allows you to use all the features of WebKit through a GNOME-based GObject-based API and can be used to integrate web content processing tools into any application, from use in specialized HTML/CSS parsers to building full-featured web browsers. Of the well-known projects using WebKitGTK, one can note Midori and the regular GNOME browser (Epiphany).

Key changes:

  • Added support for sandbox isolation of subprocesses. For security reasons, the single-process model has been deprecated;
  • Added support for the mechanism for forced activation of a secure connection HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security);
  • Implemented the ability to use hardware acceleration when rendering in Wayland-based environments (the library is used for acceleration libwpe with backend fdo);
  • Removed code to support NPAPI plugins based on GTK2;
  • Added element support for input fields datalist;
  • Provided display of the interface for entering emoji for editable content;
  • Improved button rendering when using dark GTK theme;
  • Fixed issues with artifacts appearing on the Youtube volume control button and the Github comment dialog.

Based on WebKitGTK 2.26.0 formed release of GNOME Web 3.34 (Epiphany), which has sandbox isolation of web content processing enabled by default. Handlers are now limited to only accessing the directories needed for the browser to work. Innovations also include:

  • Ability to pin tabs (tab pinning). Once pinned, the tab stays where it is in new sessions.
  • The ad blocker has been updated to use the content filtering tools provided by WebKit. The transition to the new API has significantly improved the performance of the blocker.
  • The design of the overview page, which opens in a new tab, has been modernized.
  • Work has been done on optimization for mobile devices.
