Release of WebKitGTK 2.30.0 browser engine and Epiphany 3.38 web browser

Submitted by release of a new stable branch WebKit GTK 2.30.0, browser engine port W for GTK platform. WebKitGTK allows you to use all the features of WebKit through a GNOME-based GObject-based API and can be used to integrate web content processing tools into any application, from use in specialized HTML/CSS parsers to building full-featured web browsers. Of the well-known projects using WebKitGTK, one can note Midori and the regular GNOME browser (Epiphany).

Key changes:

  • Added mechanism support ITP (Intelligent Tracking Prevention) to counteract tracking of user movements between sites. ITP blocks the installation of third-party cookies and HSTS, truncates the transmission of information in the Referrer header, limits Cookies set via JavaScript to 7 days, and blocks common methods to bypass movement blocking.
  • Added support for CSS property
    backdrop-filter to apply graphical effects to an area behind an element.

  • Stopped using GTK themes for rendering web form elements. Added an API to disable the use of GTK for scrollbars.
  • Support for video formats has been added to the "img" element.
  • Autoplay video and audio is disabled by default. Added API for setting rules for automatic video playback.
  • Added an API to disable sound for a specific web view.
  • An option has been added to the context menu to extract bare text from the clipboard, even if text with formatting is placed on the clipboard.

Based on WebKitGTK 2.30.0 formed the release of the GNOME Web 3.38 (Epiphany) browser, in which:

  • Protection against tracking user movements between sites is enabled by default.
  • Added the ability to block sites from storing data in local storages in the settings.
  • Implemented support for importing passwords and bookmarks from the Google Chrome browser.
  • The built-in password manager has been redesigned.
  • Added buttons to mute/unmute sound in selected tabs.
  • Redesigned dialogs with settings and history of visits.
  • By default, automatic playback of video with sound is disabled.
  • Added the ability to configure autoplay video in relation to individual sites.
