Release of CentOS Linux 8 and CentOS Stream 8

Today is the day of big news in the CentOS project.

First, as promised, CentOS Linux 8 was released, build 8.0.1905.

The release is a rebuild of the RHEL 8.0 release released in May this year.

Of the significant changes, mention should be made of AppStreams - an enterprise version of the concept Fedora Modularity.

The essence of the approach is to provide simultaneous availability different versions of the same package. At the same time, unlike Software Collections, simultaneous installation different versions of the same stack are not supported.

So, for example, PostgreSQL9 and PostgreSQL10 modular packages are available in the repositories, you can install one of them.

Secondly, along with the release of the regular release, the CentOS project also announced the launch of a new project - CentOS Stream.

CentOS Stream is a rolling branch of the CentOS distribution, which will contain changes planned for release in the next RHEL release, and published to this release.

Package updates within the CentOS Stream may come out several times a day.

The goal of the project is to enable the community, partners and everyone to participate in the development of RHEL and CentOS at an early stage.

At the moment, CentOS Stream 8 is almost identical in composition to the CentOS Linux 8 branch. The difference will appear a little later, when changes from the internal branches of RHEL 8.1, 8.2 and beyond begin to flow into CentOS Stream.
