MATE 1.24 desktop environment release, GNOME 2 fork

Submitted by desktop environment release MATE 1.24, which continued the development of the GNOME 2.32 code base while maintaining the classic concept of desktop formation. Installation packages for MATE 1.24 will be coming soon prepared by for Arch Linux, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, OTHER and other distributions.

In the new release:

  • First results presented initiatives for porting MATE apps to Wayland. To work without being tied to X11 in the Wayland environment, the Eye of MATE image viewer has been adapted. Improved support for Wayland in the MATE panel. Adapted panel-multimonitor and panel-background applets for use with Wayland (system-tray, panel-struts and panel-background-monitor marked as X11-only);
  • In the Startup Applications configurator, the ability to determine which applications should be shown when starting MATE has appeared;
  • Support for additional rpm, udeb, and Zstandard formats has been added to the Engrampa archiver. Improved work with archives protected by a password or using Unicode characters;
  • Eye of MATE image viewer (a fork of Eye of GNOME) adds support for built-in color profiles, redesigned thumbnail generation, and implemented support for WebP images;
  • The marco window manager implements support for invisible borders for window resizing, which saves the user from having to find an edge to grab the window with the mouse. All window controls (buttons for closing, minimizing and expanding) are adapted for screens with a high pixel density;
  • Implemented new modern and nostalgic window decoration themes Add Atlanta, Esco, Gorilla, Motif and Raleigh;
  • Completely redesigned dialogs for switching virtual desktops and changing tasks (Alt + Tab), which are now more customizable, implemented in the style of the on-screen panel (OSD) and support navigation with keyboard arrows;
  • Added the ability to cycle through tiles of different sizes using the keyboard;
  • Support for NVMe drives has been added to the System Monitor applet;
  • The scientific calculation mode has been improved in the calculator, the ability to use both "pi" and "Ο€" for Pi has been added, corrections have been made related to the support of predefined physical constants;
  • In the control center, the correct display of icons on
    screens with high pixel density (HiDPI);

  • Added new application for time management (Time And Date Manager);
  • Acceleration profiles have been added to the mouse settings application;
  • Added integration with instant messaging clients to the interface for selecting preferred handler applications and made improvements for people with disabilities;
  • The Indicator applet has improved handling of non-standard size icons;
  • Completely redesigned and adapted for HiDPI screens icons of the network settings applet;
  • Added a "do not disturb" mode to the notification manager, which allows you to disable the display of notifications while important work is being done;
  • Fixed bugs in the taskbar that caused a crash when changing the panel layout. Status display icons (notifications, system tray, etc.) are adapted for HiDPI screens;
  • The "Wanda the Fish" applet, showing the output of a predefined command, is fully adapted to high pixel density (HiDPI) screens;
  • In the applet that shows the list of windows, the display of window thumbnails is implemented when the cursor is hovered over;
  • For systems not using systemd, support is implemented elogind in the screen saver and session manager;
  • Added a new utility for mounting disk images ( MATE Disk Image Mounter);
  • Added support for undoing changes (Undo and Redo) to the Mozo menu editor;
  • The Pluma text editor (a fork of Gedit) now has the ability to show formatting marks. Pluma plugins are fully translated to Python 3;
  • The internationalization code for all applications has been moved from intltools to gettext.
