Release of the distribution kit for creating firewalls pfSense 2.6.0

The release of the compact distribution kit for creating firewalls and network gateways pfSense 2.6.0 has been published. The distribution is based on the FreeBSD code base with the m0n0wall project and active use of pf and ALTQ. An iso image for the amd64 architecture has been prepared for download, 430 MB in size.

The distribution kit is managed via the web interface. Captive Portal, NAT, VPN (IPsec, OpenVPN) and PPPoE can be used to organize the exit of users in a wired and wireless network. Supports a wide range of options for limiting bandwidth, limiting the number of simultaneous connections, filtering traffic and creating fault-tolerant configurations based on CARP. Work statistics are displayed in the form of graphs or in tabular form. Authorization is supported by the local user database, as well as via RADIUS and LDAP.

Key changes:

  • By default, the installation now uses the ZFS file system.
  • A new widget has been added to estimate free disk space, which has replaced the list with disk parameters in the System Information widget.
  • Work has been done to improve the stability and performance of IPsec. Changed name of IPsec VTI network interfaces (existing settings will be updated automatically). Widgets for displaying IPsec status have been extended and optimized.
  • AutoConfigBackup resolves page opening delay issues while a backup is in progress.
  • The default password hashing algorithm is SHA-512 instead of bcrypt.
  • Improved the wireless disconnect page in the Captive Portal.
  • The tmpfs file system is used for the operation of RAM disks.
