Release of the distribution kit Network Security Toolkit 34

After a year of development, the NST 34 (Network Security Toolkit) Live distribution kit was released, designed to analyze network security and monitor its operation. The size of the bootable iso image (x86_64) is 4.8 GB. A special repository has been prepared for Fedora Linux users, which makes it possible to install all the developments created within the framework of the NST project into an already installed system. The distribution is based on Fedora 34 and allows installation of additional packages from external repositories that are compatible with Fedora Linux.

The distribution includes a large selection of applications related to network security (for example: Wireshark, NTop, Nessus, Snort, NMap, Kismet, TcpTrack, Etherape, nsttracroute, Ettercap, etc.). To manage the security check process and automate the call of various utilities, a special web interface has been prepared, which also integrates a web frontend for the Wireshark network analyzer. The distribution's graphical environment is based on FluxBox.

In the new release:

  • The package base is synchronized with Fedora 34. The Linux 5.12 kernel is involved. Updated to the latest releases supplied as part of the application.
  • The lft utility is integrated into the NST WUI web interface (an alternative to the traceroute and whois utilities that supports various modes of route tracing, including those based on TCP SYN / FIN, and displaying information about autonomous systems).
  • Added support for Ntopng REST API to NST WUI.
  • NST WUI provides the ability to display the results of a quick directory scan in a table format.
  • Includes etherapedump NST script for allocating network resources from Etherape XML files.
  • The display of the status of switching network interfaces to the "promiscuous" mode has been provided, which allows analyzing transit network frames that are not addressed to the current system.
Release of the distribution kit Network Security Toolkit 34
  • In the NST WUI section for working with Nmap, scan options have been added to determine DHCP and SMB services.
  • The massdns utility has been added to the NST Host Name Tools widget to send DNS queries in batch mode.
  • The old navigation menu that was shown in the left column has been removed from the main page of NST WUI.
  • In NST WUI, buttons for copying to the clipboard have been added to the pages with tabular reports.
