Release of the openSUSE Leap 15.1 distribution

After a year of development took place
distribution release openSUSE Leap 15.1. The release is built using a base set of packages from the development distribution of SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP1, on top of which newer releases of custom applications from the repository are provided. openSUSE Tumbleweed. For loading available universal DVD build, 3.8 GB, truncated image for installation with downloading packages over the network (125 MB) and Live builds with KDE and GNOME (900 MB).

All innovations:

  • Updated distribution components. As with SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP1, the base Linux kernel continues to be shipped based on version 4.12, to which some changes from the 4.19 kernel have been ported since the last release of openSUSE. In particular, new graphics drivers have been ported and support for AMD Vega chips has been added. Added new drivers for wireless chips, sound cards and MMC drives. When building the default kernel is included the CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY option, which has a positive effect on the responsiveness of the GNOME desktop.
  • In addition to GCC 7, packages with the GCC 8 compiler set have been added;
  • To configure the network on the PC, the default is enabled
    Network Manager, which was previously offered only for laptops. Server builds continue to use Wicked by default. Some configuration files, such as /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/yp.conf, are now created in the /run directory and managed through netconfig, and /etc is symlinked;

  • YaST has redesigned the system service management components to take advantage of various advanced features of systemd. Added a new user interface for configuring Firewalld, available also in text mode and supporting AutoYaST. The yast2-configuration-management module has improved support for the Salt configuration management system and added the ability to manage SSH keys for individual users.

    YaST and AutoYaST have upgraded the interface for managing disk partitions, which now supports automatic formatting of empty disks that do not contain any partitions, as well as the ability to create software RAID over an entire disk or individual partitions. Work has been done to improve support for 4K (HiDPI) screens, for which the correct user interface scaling settings are now automatically applied, including the installer interface;

  • The installer provides the ability to choose between Wicked and NetworkManager network configurators. Added passwordless SSH setup mode with SSH key for root during installation;
  • As with the last release of openSUSE, the KDE Plasma 5.12 and GNOME 3.26 user environments are offered. The KDE Applications suite has been updated to version 18.12.3. MATE, Xfce, LXQt, Enlightenment and Cinnamon environments are also available for installation. SLE 15 distribution users can now install community-supported KDE packages from PackageHub;
  • Integrated lightweight toolkit for managing isolated containers, using a utility to build containers Buildah and runtime from the project podman. A container management toolkit is also available Singularity, optimized for isolated launch of individual applications;
  • Simplified distribution installation on Raspberry Pi boards based on ARM64 architecture. For installation on the Raspberry Pi, you can now use standard assemblies - the installer of the usual installation image for ARM determines the presence of the board and offers a set of default settings, including creating a separate partition for firmware.
  • A build with the β€œ-fstack-clash-protection” option is provided, when specified, the compiler substitutes test calls (probe) for each static or dynamic allocation of space for the stack, which allow you to detect stack overflows and block attack methods based on stack and heap intersections, related to the forwarding of the execution flow through the guard pages of the stack protection;
  • Script based dehydrated Implemented Let's Encrypt certificate generation and renewal templates for Apache httpd, nginx and lighttpd.
