Porteus 5.0 distribution release

The release of the Porteus 5.0 live distribution, built on the Slackware Linux 15 package base and offering builds with Xfce, Cinnamon, GNOME, KDE, LXDE, LXQt, MATE and OpenBox user environments, has been published. The composition of the distribution kit is selected for minimal resource consumption, which allows you to use Porteus on outdated equipment. Of the features, there is also a high download speed. Compact Live images are offered for download, about 350 MB in size, built for the i586 and x86_64 architectures.

Additional applications are distributed in the form of modules. Package management uses its own PPM (Porteus Package Manager) package manager, which takes into account dependencies and allows you to install programs from the Porteus, Slackware, and Slackbuilds.org repositories. The interface is built with an eye on the possibility of using it on devices with a small screen resolution. The Porteus Settings Centre's own configurator is used for configuration. The distribution is loaded from a compressed FS image, but all changes made during operation (browser history, bookmarks, downloaded files, etc.) can be saved separately on a USB drive or hard drive. When booting in 'Always Fresh' mode, changes are not saved.

The new version is synchronized with Slackware 15.0, the Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.18, and the BusyBox utility set in the initrd has been updated to version 1.35. The number of generated assemblies has been increased to 8. To reduce the size of the image, the components for supporting the Perl language have been moved to the external module 05-devel. Added support for slackpkg and slpkg package managers. Support for installation on NMVe drives has been added to the bootloader toolkit.
