Scientific Linux 7.8 distribution release

Submitted by distribution release Scientific Linux 7.8, built on a package basis Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.8 and supplemented by means oriented to use in scientific institutions.
Distribution supplied for x86_64 architecture, in the form of DVD builds (9.9 GB and 8.1 GB), a reduced image for installation over the network (627 MB). Publishing Live builds is delayed.

Differences from RHEL in the bulk come down to rebranding and cleaning up bindings to Red Hat services. Scientific-specific applications, as well as additional drivers, are offered for installation from external repositories such as WARM ΠΈ elrepo.org. Before upgrading to Scientific Linux 7.8, it is recommended to run 'yum clean all' to clear the cache.

All features Scientific Linux 7.8:

  • Added packages with Python 3.6 (Python 3 was not part of RHEL before);
  • Added package with OpenAFS, an open implementation of the distributed FS Andrew File System;
  • Added SL_gdm_no_user_list package to disable display of user list in GDM if more stringent security policy is required;
  • Added package SL_enable_serialconsole to configure a console that works via a serial port;
  • Added package SL_no_colorls to disable color output in ls;
  • Changes made to packages, mainly related to rebranding: anaconda, dhcp, grub2, httpd, ipa, kernel, libreport, PackageKit, pesign, plymouth, redhat-rpm-config, shim, yum, cockpit;
  • Compared to the Scientific Linux 6.x branch, the alpine, SL_desktop_tweaks, SL_password_for_singleuser, yum-autoupdate, yum-conf-adobe, thunderbird packages (available in the EPEL7 repository) are excluded from the base package.
  • Components (shim, grub2, Linux kernel) used when booting in UEFI Secure Boot mode are signed with a Scientific Linux key, which, when verified boot is enabled, requires manual operations, since the key must be added to the firmware;
  • The yum-cron system is used to automatically install updates, instead of yum-autoupdate. By default, updates are applied automatically and then notified to the user. To change the behavior at the stage of automated installation, the packages SL_yum-cron_no_automated_apply_updates (prohibits automatic installation of updates) and SL_yum-cron_no_default_excludes (allows installation of updates with the kernel) have been prepared;
  • External repositories configuration files (EPEL, ELRepo,
    SL-Extras, SL-SoftwareCollections, ZFSonLinux) have been moved to a centralized repository since these repositories are not specific to specific releases and can be used with any version of Scientific Linux 7. To download the data about the repositories, run "yum install yum-conf-repos" and then set up individual repositories, like "yum install yum-conf-epel yum-conf-zfsonlinux yum-conf-softwarecollections yum-conf-hc yum-conf-extras yum-conf-elrepo".
