FreeBSD 11.4 release

11 months after the release of 11.3 and 7 months after the release of 12.1 available FreeBSD 11.4 release, which prepared by for amd64, i386, powerpc, powerpc64, sparc64, aarch64 and armv6 architectures (BEAGLEBONE, CUBIEBOARD, CUBIEBOARD2, CUBOX-HUMMINGBOARD, Raspberry Pi B, Raspberry Pi 2, PANDABOARD, WANDBOARD). Additionally prepared images for virtualization systems (QCOW2, VHD, VMDK, raw) and Amazon EC2 cloud environments.

FreeBSD 11.4 will be the last release in the 11.x series. Release 11.3 support will be terminated in 3 months, and support for FreeBSD 11.4 and the entire 11-STABLE branch will continue until September 30, 2021. FreeBSD 12.2 release expected 27 October.

Key innovations:

  • Clang, libc++, compiler-rt, LLDB, LLD and LLVM components updated to version 10.0;
  • In ZFS added possibility of renaming bookmarks for snapshots. Reduced latency when synchronously writing 128KB blocks. The ability to configure the maximum size of the block ZFS ZIL (ZFS intent log) is provided;
  • The utility is included certctl to manage certificates and black lists of revoked certificates;
  • Support for CGN subnets has been added to the libalias library and the ipfw packet filter (Carrier Grade NAT, RFC 6598);
  • Support for Accessible Max Address Configuration (AMA) has been added to the camcontrol utility and the command "modepageΒ» to add block descriptors;
  • The size of the YPMAXRECORD parameter in the subsystem yp increased from 1M to 16M for Linux compatibility;
  • Command added to usbconfig utility detach_kernel_driver;
  • To utility jot added the ability to output an endless stream of random data corresponding to the specified boundaries;
  • To the freebsd-update utility added new commands updatesready to check if updates are installed and showconfig to show settings;
  • In crontab, the "-n" and "-q" flags are implemented to disable sending emails and output to the log when the command is run;
  • Added dump_stats command to usbconfig;
  • In fsck_ffs and newfs established search for information about spare superblocks for drives with a sector size of more than 4K (up to 64K);
  • Added "-L" and "-U" flags to the env command to set the environment for a given user from the login.conf and ~/.login_conf files;
  • Added support for filters based on syslogd properties;
  • Removed netatalk protocol from network services database (/etc/services);
  • Support added to ng_nat driver attachments to the Ethernet interface;
  • Updated hardware support. Added support for Intel Cannon Lake chips to the snd_hda audio driver. Updated driver versions aacraid 3.2.10 and ena 2.2.0. Added support for JMicron JMB582 and JMB585 AHCI controllers. Added support for D-Link DWM-222 LTE modems.
  • Added a warning to the crypto driver that support for ARC4, Blowfish, CAST128, DES, 3DES, MD5-HMAC, and Skipjack is about to end. Added a deprecation warning to the Kerberos GSS API about algorithms defined in RFC 6649 and 8429 in the "SHOULD NOT" section.
  • Marked deprecated and will be removed in FreeBSD 13.0 driver ubsec, which provides support for Broadcom and BlueSteel uBsec 5x0x crypto accelerators;
  • Updated pkg 1.13.2, OpenSSL 1.0.2u, Unbound 1.9.6, ntpd 4.2.8p14, WPA Supplicant 2.9, tcsh 6.21.0;
  • The ports offer desktop environments KDE 5.18.4 and GNOME 3.28.
