The distribution's user shell is based on a lightweight LXDE desktop environment built on top of the GTK library and capable of running on low-end systems. Instead of the standard SysV initialization system, a new Microknoppix boot system is used, which significantly speeds up the distribution boot process by running services in parallel and deferred hardware initialization. When using USB Flash, user settings and additionally installed programs do not disappear after a system reboot - the data saved between sessions is placed in the KNOPPIX/knoppix-data.img file, which, if desired, can be encrypted using the AES-256 algorithm.
