Release of a minimalistic set of system utilities Toybox 0.8.7

The release of the Toybox 0.8.7 system utilities set has been published, as well as BusyBox designed as a single executable file and optimized for minimal consumption of system resources. The project is being developed by former maintainer BusyBox and distributed under the 0BSD license. The main purpose of Toybox is to enable manufacturers to use a minimalistic set of standard utilities without opening the source code of modified components. In terms of capabilities, Toybox still lags behind BusyBox, but 299 basic commands (220 fully and 79 partially) have already been implemented out of 378 planned.

New features in Toybox 0.8.7 include:

  • The host, wget, openvt and deallocvt commands have been moved to the category of fully implemented ones.
  • Added new commands uclampset, gpiodetect, gpioinfo, gpioiget, gpiofind and gpioset.
  • Added implementation of a simple HTTP server httpd.
  • Removed catv command (similar to cat -v).
  • The top utility now has the ability to switch lists with the left and right keys and change the sorting with the β€œShift + left or right” combinations.
  • Added support for "find -samefile", "cmp -n", "tar --strip" options.
  • Extraction of device descriptions from /etc/{usb,pci}.ids[.gz] files has been added to the lsusb and lspci utilities.
  • Support for renaming network interfaces has been added to the ifconfig utility.
  • Added support for the POST method to the wget utility for sending web form data.
