IceWM 1.5 window manager release

After two years of development prepared by new significant release of lightweight window manager IceWM 1.5.5 (first release in the 1.5.x branch). Branch 1.5 continues the development of an unofficial fork that branched off from the abandoned IceWM codebase in December 2015. The code is written in C and spreads licensed under GPLv2.

IceWM features include full control via keyboard shortcuts, the ability to use virtual desktops, the taskbar and menu applications. The window manager is configured through a fairly simple configuration file; themes can be used. Built-in applets are available for monitoring CPU, memory, and traffic. Separately, several third-party GUIs are being developed for customization, desktop implementations, and menu editors.

Major changes:

  • Implemented the ability to change settings through the menu. Added a graphical screen parameters configurator that allows you to change RandR settings;
  • Added a new menu generator;
  • Improved implementation of the system tray. Added the ability to customize the order in which buttons are displayed in the tray;
  • The definition and loading of icons has been optimized;
  • Expanded menus with lists of windows;
  • New features have been added to the monitoring applet and the load on the CPU during its operation has been reduced;
  • The new email tracking applet now supports TLS-encrypted POP and IMAP connections, as well as Gmail and Maildir;
  • Added the ability to cyclically change desktop wallpaper;
  • Provides support for both vertical and horizontal placement of the Quickswitch block;
  • Added support for composite managers;
  • The address bar supports a history of previously used commands;
  • By default the mode is enabled
    PagerShowPreview;

  • Added support for the _NET_WM_PING, _NET_REQUEST_FRAME_EXTENTS, _NET_WM_STATE_FOCUSED and _NET_WM_WINDOW_OPACITY protocols;
  • Updated event sound system;
  • Changes have been made to improve tolerability;
  • Added new hotkeys;
  • Added FocusCurrentWorkspace option to select an alternative behavior when setting focus. Implemented the ability to change the focus model without restarting. Added support for changing focus and desktops using the mouse wheel;
  • For design themes, the TaskbuttonIconOffset option has been implemented, which is used in the Outside-ice theme;
  • Added support for SVG.
