IceWM 2.3 window manager release

The lightweight window manager IceWM 2.3 is now available. IceWM provides full control through keyboard shortcuts, the ability to use virtual desktops, the taskbar and application menus. The window manager is configured through a fairly simple configuration file, it is possible to use themes. Built-in applets are available for monitoring CPU, memory, traffic. Separately, several third-party GUIs for customization, desktop implementations, and menu editors are being developed. The code is written in C++ and distributed under the GPLv2 license.

In the new release:

  • Added the NetStatusShowOnlyRunning setting to show only active network interfaces in the panel.
  • Added the TaskBarTaskGrouping setting to group similar applications and display them with one button on the panel.
  • The ability to switch virtual desktops through a menu with a list of windows and through the Alt+Tab combination in the QuickSwitch window has been implemented.
  • QuickSwitch adds support for the mouse wheel, cursor, Home, End, Delete and Enter keys, as well as the numbers '1-9' for navigating desktops and open windows.
  • Work has been done to reduce the system calls involved when updating the network state or when working with files in the filereader class.
  • The process of displaying tooltips has been optimized, which are now updated only when the window with the tooltip is in the visibility area.
  • Added an option to the icehelp menu to open the current document in the browser.
  • Added support for additional mouse buttons (up to 9 buttons).
  • Added support for colored cursors.
