OpenWRT release 19.07

Builds of a major new release of OpenWRT, an open source Linux distribution for home network routers, have been generated. The main innovations visible to the user:

  • All devices use the 4.14.x kernel.
  • The ath79 architecture has been added, which supports devices that previously belonged to the ar71xx architecture. The difference is the use of Device Tree instead of explicitly writing the specifics of each device in C-files.
  • Routing performance has been significantly improved through the introduction of FLOWOFFLOAD technology. The essence of the technology is the ability to tell the kernel that all future packets belonging to a specific network connection no longer need to be checked for firewall rules, QoS policies and changed routing rules, just rewrite the headers and send through the remembered output interface. In total, TP-Link Archer C7 v2 can now route not 250-300 megabits per second, but 700-800.
  • WPA3 support is available for wireless networks (requires installation of hostapd-openssl or wpad-openssl package).
  • The web interface has become more responsive by moving templating to the client side.
  • In the Transmission torrent client, problems with 100% CPU consumption and an unjustified amount of memory are solved by disabling semi-working support for web seeds.
  • An alternative lightweight SMB server implementation at the kernel level has been added as a solution to the problem that SAMBA 3.6 is no longer supported in terms of security and is limited by older versions of the SMB protocol, and SAMBA 4 takes up too much space. SAMBA 4 is also available and allows you to set up an Active Directory compatible domain controller.
