Release of the platform for confidential messaging RetroShare 0.6.6

After two years of development, a new version of RetroShare 0.6.6 is presented, a platform for confidential file and messaging using an encrypted Friend-to-Friend network. In this type of peer-to-peer networking, users establish direct connections only with peers they trust. Builds are prepared for Windows, FreeBSD and many GNU/Linux distributions. The RetroShare source code is written in C++ using the Qt toolkit and distributed under the AGPLv3 license.

In addition to direct messaging, the program provides tools for chatting with several people, organizing voice and video calls, sending encrypted e-mail to network users, organizing file exchange with selected users or any network member (using a technology similar to BitTorrent), creating tamper-proof censorship of decentralized forums with support for writing messages offline, the formation of channels for the delivery of content by subscription.

In the new release:

  • The interface for working with messages has been redesigned, a new design for channels and forums (board) has been added. To display publications, two modes are proposed - stack and list:

  • The system of tokens used to connect to other users has been redesigned. Identifiers have become significantly shorter and now fit into the size of a QR code, which makes it easier to transfer the identifier to other users. The identifier includes the host and profile names, the SSL Id, the hashed snapshot of the profile, and information about the IP addresses to connect to.

  • Various improvements have been made to the interface, for example, a new tab for identifiers has been added, the readability of the home page has been improved, and the ability to pin topics in the forum has been redone.
  • When generating a digital signature of certificates, the SHA1 algorithm is used instead of SHA256. The old asynchronous token system has been replaced with a new blocking API.
  • Instead of the retroshare-nogui console server, the retroshare-service service is proposed, which can be used both on server systems without a monitor and on devices based on the Android platform.
  • License changed from GPLv2 to AGPLv3 for GUI and LGPLv3 for libretroshare.
