Release of HandBrake 1.3.0 video transcoding software

After a year of development submitted release of a tool for multi-threaded transcoding of video files from one format to another - Hand Brake 1.3.0. The program is available both as a command line version and as a GUI interface. The project code is written in the C language (for Windows, the GUI is implemented in .NET) and spreads under the GPL license. Binary assemblies prepared by for linux (Ubuntu, Flatpak), macOS and Windows.

The program can transcode video from BluRay/DVD discs, copies of the VIDEO_TS directory and any files whose format is supported by the libavformat and libavcodec libraries from FFmpeg/LibAV. At the output, files can be generated in containers such as WebM, MP4 and MKV, AV1, H.265, H.264, MPEG-2, VP8, VP9 and Theora codecs can be used for video encoding, AAC, MP3 for audio , AC-3, Flac, Vorbis and Opus. Additional features include: bitrate calculator, preview during encoding, image resizing and scaling, subtitle integrator, a wide range of conversion profiles for specific types of mobile devices.

In the new release:

  • Added support for AV1 video encoding format (via libdav1d);
  • Added support for WebM media containers;
  • Changed interface design for management transcoding queues;
  • Added presets for Playstation 4 Pro (2160p60 4K Surround), Discord and Discord Nitro. Removed presets for Windows Phone. Improved presets for Gmail;
  • Improved detection of MPEG-1 video in streams;
  • Added support for reading Blu-ray Ultra HD discs (without copy protection);
  • Added color smoothing filter (Chroma Smooth) to CLI;
  • Added support for low power encoding mode (lowpower=1) using Intel QSV accelerators (Quick Sync Videos). Added ability to use Intel QSV to Flatpak-based package;
  • Added the ability to use AMD VCE engines to speed up encoding on Linux;
  • Improved support for accelerated encoding using NVIDIA NVENC;
  • Added support for setting encoding level for x265 and
    Fast Decode mode adjustments;

  • Added support for importing external subtitles in SSA/ASS formats;
  • Added build capability for NetBSD platform;
  • Added build options "--harden" and "--sandbox" to apply additional protection against buffer overflows and enable sandbox isolation;
  • Added "--enable-gtk4" build option to build with experimental releases of GTK 4 instead of GTK 3.
