Release of Proxmox VE 6.1, a distribution kit for organizing the work of virtual servers

Took place Release Proxmox Virtual Environment 6.1, a specialized Linux distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux aimed at deploying and maintaining virtual servers using LXC and KVM and capable of acting as a replacement for products such as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V and Citrix XenServer. Installation size iso image 776 Mb.

Proxmox VE provides the means to deploy a turnkey, web-based industrial grade virtual server system for managing hundreds or even thousands of virtual machines. The distribution has built-in tools for organizing virtual environment backups and clustering support available out of the box, including the ability to migrate virtual environments from one node to another without stopping work. Among the features of the web-interface: support for secure VNC-console; access control to all available objects (VM, storage, nodes, etc.) based on roles; support for various authentication mechanisms (MS ADS, LDAP, Linux PAM, Proxmox VE authentication).

В new release:

  • The package database is in sync with Debian 10.2. The Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.3. Additionally, a Linux 5.0 kernel is supplied based on packages from Ubuntu 19.04 with ZFS support. Updated versions
    Ceph Nautilus 14.2.4.1, Corosync 3.0, LXC 3.2, QEMU 4.1.1 and ZFS 0.8.2;

  • Changes in the web interface
    • More data center configuration options can now be edited through the GUI, including two-factor authentication settings and cluster-level bandwidth limiting for the following types of traffic: migration, backup/restore, cloning, disk move.
    • Improvements in two-factor authentication to allow the use of a TOTP hardware key.
    • Mobile GUI: Implemented login for user accounts with TOTP two-factor authentication support.
    • Continued work on converting pictograms from raster to vectorized formats from Font Awesome.
    • noVNC scaling mode can now be changed in My Settings.
    • New "Run Now" button to run cluster-wide backup jobs.
    • With ifupdown2 installed, it is now possible to change the network configuration and update it from the GUI, without rebooting.
  • Changes for containers
    • Implemented pending changes for containers. You can make changes to a running container and they will be applied the next time the container is reloaded.
    • Reloading a running container via the GUI, API, and Command Line Interface (CLI).
    • Hot-plugging mount points using the new mount API available in the Linux 5.3 kernel.
    • Support for the latest releases of GNU/Linux distributions such as Fedora 31, CentOS 8 and Ubuntu 19.10.
  • Changes to SPICE
    • Audio devices can now be added via the GUI (no need to edit the config file).
    • Directories can now be shared between the SPICE client and the virtual machine (this feature is currently considered experimental).
    • You can enable video streaming support, which helps improve performance when displaying rapidly changing display areas, such as when watching a video.
    • The SPICE USB device now supports USB3 (QEMU >= 4.1).
  • Improvements in backup and restore features
    • Virtual machines with IOThreads enabled in the settings can now be reserved.
    • It is possible to manually start scheduled backup jobs from the data center in a graphical interface.
  • HA stack improvements
    • New "migrate" shutdown policy. If you enable it at shutdown, running services will be transferred to another node. As soon as the node comes back online, and if the services have not been manually moved to another node in the meantime, the services will be moved back.
    • New command 'crm-command stop'. Shuts down the virtual machine/container with the specified timeout and performs a hard stop if the timeout is set to "0". The command to stop the virtual machine or container will now call this new crm-command.
  • QEMU improvements
    • Allow domains other than '0000' for PCI(e) passthrough.
    • New "reboot" API call. Allows pending changes to be applied without waiting for the guest to shut down before starting it again.
    • Fixed a QEMU monitor timeout issue that prevented successful backups in certain configurations.
    • PCI(e) passthrough supports up to 16 PCI(e) devices.
    • Support for QEMU Guest Agents using the ISA serial port (not VirtIO) for communication, which, among other things, will allow the use of QEMU Guest Agents on FreeBSD.
  • General improvements for virtual guests
    • Added "tags" to guest configurations. This meta-information can be useful for things like configuration management (not yet supported in the GUI).
    • VM/CT: "Purge" has learned how to remove the corresponding virtual machine or container from replication jobs, or backups on destruction.
      • Cluster stability
        • A number of bugs have been identified and fixed in upstream (in collaboration with corosync and kronosnet).
        • Fixes issues some users were experiencing when changing MTU.
        • pmxcfs has been audited using ASAN (AddressSanitizer) and UBSAN (Undefined Behavior Sanitizer), resulting in various possible issues being fixed for certain edge cases.
      • Storage system
        • Allows setting non-standard "mount point" properties for ZFS.
        • The use of .img files as an alternative to .iso images is allowed.
        • Various iSCSI improvements.
        • Redesigned support for ZFS on iSCSI with LIO target provider.
        • All features offered by newer kernels with Ceph and KRBD are supported.
      • Various improvements
        • Support for raw tables has been added to the firewall and using them to protect against Synflood attacks.
        • Implemented automatic renewal of a self-signed certificate 2 weeks before the expiration date.
        • The validity period of newly generated certificates has been shortened (2 years instead of 10 years). The change was made because some modern browsers complain about the very long validity period of the certificate.
      • Proofreading of parts of the documentation (style and grammar) was carried out. Extended documentation for Ceph administration.
      • Numerous bug fixes and package updates (see full details in bug tracker и GIT repositories).
