NetworkManager 1.42.0 release

A stable release of the interface is available to simplify network settings - NetworkManager 1.42.0. Plugins for VPN support (Libreswan, OpenConnect, Openswan, SSTP, etc.) are developed within their own development cycles.

Key innovations in NetworkManager 1.42:

  • The nmcli command line interface implements support for configuring an authentication method based on the IEEE 802.1X standard, which is common for protecting corporate wireless networks and organizing authenticated access to switch ports in wired networks.

  • It is possible to change the parameters of the loopback interface and attach a connection profile to it, which allows, for example, to bind an additional IP address to the loopback interface.
  • Added support for ECMP (Equal-cost multi-path) routing, which allows you to change the weights for routes and control flows in multipath routing, in which packets can be delivered along several routes through different network interfaces bound to different IP addresses.
  • The DNS-over-TLS server settings allow specifying a hostname, not just an IP address.
  • The ability to use 802.1ad protocol headers (VLAN stacking or QinQ) for VLAN tagging is provided, which, unlike the 802.1Q protocol, allows nested headers and substitution of several VLAN tags in one Ethernet frame.
  • Added support for load balancing across bonded Ethernet interfaces in relation to the source (source load balancing).
  • Support for the VTI protocol has been implemented for IP tunnels.
  • WEP support has been removed from the nmtui utility.
