Release of Caliber 5.0 e-book collection management system

Available application release Caliber 5.0, which automates the basic operations of maintaining a collection of electronic books. Caliber offers interfaces for navigating the library, reading books, converting formats, synchronizing with portable reading devices, and viewing news about new releases on popular web resources. The composition also includes a server implementation for organizing access to the home collection from anywhere on the Web.

In the new version:

  • Added the ability to attach notes and highlight certain sections of text while viewing e-books in a browser or in a separate viewer. Highlighting can be carried out both with the help of color, and through underlining or strikethrough. Information about selections and notes is saved inside the file in EPUB format. A special sidebar is offered for navigating through selected areas and notes.

  • Added dark mode, available in the main interface, viewer, E-book editor and Content Server. On Linux, dark mode is enabled using the CALIBRE_USE_DARK_PALETTE=1 environment variable.

  • An advanced search has been added to the e-book viewer that supports whole word searches and regular expressions. Search results are grouped by chapter.

  • Implemented support for vertical text placement and writing from right to left.
  • The migration to Python 3 has been made. For the user, the migration from Python 2 should be seamless, except for the end of support some third party plugins, which have not been ported to Python 3 by their authors.
  • The format of the library database has been changed, to which support for annotations has been added. The previous release of Caliber 4.23 may work with libraries created in Caliber 5.0, but compatibility is not guaranteed for earlier releases.
