После почти трёх лет разработки официально объявлен релиз среды рабочего стола MATE 1.28, продолжающей развитие кодовой базы GNOME 2.32 с сохранением классической концепции формирования рабочего стола. Анонс релиза датирован февралём, но объявление на сайте проекта появилось всего несколько часов назад, а до этого новая ветка упоминалась только в виде тегов в Git-репозитории проекта, без явного объявления о релизе и без публикации общего перечня изменений. Пакеты с MATE 1.28 уже доступны в репозиториях таких дистрибутивов, как Fedora 40, Gentoo, Mageia, Manjaro, openSUSE Tumbleweed, Arch Linux, ALT Linux, Artix, OpenIndiana, GhostBSD, Parabola, Solus и Void Linux.

- The Quickhighlight plugin has been added to the Pluma text editor, providing highlighting of places in the document where a selected piece of text occurs.
- The MATE Terminal terminal emulator ensures correct transfer of files from the file manager to the terminal window (the path to the file is inserted). Added support for OSC 8 escape sequences for inserting hyperlinks. Improved work with tabs - added support for double-clicking on a tab to change its name.
- mate-indicator-applet, a universal applet for displaying indicators in a panel (Ayatana AppIndicator), has added support for the middle mouse button.
- The background process for managing settings (mate-settings-daemon) has been moved from dbus-glib to GDBus.
- The system monitor (mate-system-monitor) has an improved interface and includes systemd support by default.
- Changes have been made to improve the stability and efficiency of the eom (Eye of MATE) image viewer.
- Memory leaks have been fixed and cosmetic changes have been made to the configurator.
- Improved Mozo menu editor interface.
