Release of the strategic game Warzone 2100 4.0

The free strategy (RTS) game Warzone 2100 4.0.0 has been released. The game was originally developed by Pumpkin Studios and released to the market in 1999. In 2004, the source texts were opened under the GPLv2 license and development of the game continued with the efforts of the community. Both a single player game against bots and multiplayer games are supported. Packages are prepared for Ubuntu, Windows and macOS.

A short list of improvements and changes in the new version:

  • Added support for new graphics engines:
    • Vulcan 1.0+
    • OpenGL ES 3.0/2.0
    • DirectX (via libANGLE library, OpenGL ES -> DirectX)
    • Metal (via MoltenVK library, Vulkan -> Metal)
    • OpenGL 3.0+ Core Profile (selected by default)
  • Added "Factions" for Multiplayer game mode, and games with bots.
  • Higher resolution textures.
  • Added a music manager, as well as new Lupus-Mechanicus's album soundtracks.
  • Added "scripted" / "random" map generator.
  • Scrollable lobby chat and many other UI improvements / widgets added.
  • AI bot updates and improvements (Bonecrusher, Cobra).
  • New "headless" mode to run the game without graphics output (for scripts / auto host server / bots).
  • Improved JS API and added a new "Script Debugger".
  • Removed Qt dependencies, migrated from QtScript to a new built-in JS engine: QuickJS.
  • New game builds for Windows 64-bit systems (for both Intel 64-bit / x64, and ARM64), macOS Universal Binaries with native support for Apple Silicon (in addition to Intel 64-bit).
  • 100% translation into Russian, including the windows-installer of the game.
  • Many improvements, including game balance, as well as fixing quite serious bugs.

The Russian-speaking community also makes a serious contribution to the game, where all ideas for improving and changing the balance from fans and ordinary players are taken into consideration. The community has its own portal with TeamSpeak. There is amateur automation for creating a host lobby with statistics and ratings for regular players. There is also an unofficial, but extensive base of maps for the game. There is a Discord server for the Russian-speaking audience.
