Release of the free financial accounting system GnuCash 5.0

GnuCash 5.0, a free system for individual financial accounting, has been released, providing tools for tracking income and expenses, maintaining bank accounts, managing information about shares, deposits and investments, and planning loans. With GnuCash, small business accounting and balance sheet (debit/credit) is also possible. Data import in QIF/OFX/HBCI formats and visualization of information on graphs are supported. The project code is supplied under the GPLv2+ license. There is a GnuCash variant for Android. Ready builds are prepared for Linux (flatpak), macOS and Windows.

In the new version

  • Menus and toolbars have been moved from the GtkAction and GtkActionGroup APIs to GAction and GActionGroup objects.
  • A new stock assistant (Actions > Stock Assistant) has been added that allows you to perform various investment operations with stocks, bonds and mutual funds.
  • A new report on investment lots has been added (Reports > Assets & Liabilities > Investment Lots), which generates a graph of capital investment growth and losses for investment lots.
  • The system of online quotes (Online Quotes) has been completely rewritten. The old programs for extracting information about the value of shares gnc-fq-check, gnc-fq-dump and gnc-fq-helper have been replaced by finance-quote-wrapper. The code for extracting prices from online services has been rewritten in C++.
  • In the "New/Edit Account" dialog, a new tab "More Properties" is proposed for setting the upper and lower limits of the account balance, upon reaching which a special indicator will be displayed.
  • Separate menus for import in MT940, MT942 and DTAUS formats have been replaced by the general menu "Import from AQBanking".
  • The possibilities for defining the logic of generating reports in the Guile Scheme language have been significantly expanded.
  • The reporting and ledger functionality has been completely rewritten in C++ using SWIG to link to Guile Scheme code.
