Release of T2 SDE 24.12, a platform for creating distributions

The T2 SDE 24.12 meta-distribution has been released, providing an environment for creating custom distributions, cross-compiling, and maintaining package versions up-to-date. Popular distributions built on the T2 system include Puppy. LinuxThe project provides 37 bootable ISO images with a minimal graphical environment, including versions with the Musl, uClibc, and Glibc libraries. Builds with graphical environments based on GNOME and Wayland are available for current architectures.

The platform is focused on creating kernel-based builds. Linux, but prototypes are being developed separately that allow for the compilation of packages for various operating systems, including macOS, Haiku, and BSD systems. Plans include support for creating environments based on other kernels, such as L4, Fuchsia, and RedoxOS, and generating builds based on Android (AOSP). Over 5000 packages are available for building.

T2 supports 25 hardware architectures used in both modern embedded systems and legacy hardware. For example, it supports Nintendo Wii U and Sony PS3 game consoles, SGI, Sun, and HP workstations. Some architectures can run in environments with 512 MB of RAM. Ready-to-use builds are available for the following architectures: Alpha, Arc, ARM64, Avr32, HPPA64, IA64, Loongarch64, M68k, Microblaze, MIPS64, Nios2, OpenRISC, PowerPC 64, RISC-V 64, s390x, SPARC 64, SuperH, i486, x86-64, and x32.

Among the changes in the new version:

  • Added initial support for the Nintendo Wii U game console.
  • Added packages with the Cosmic user environment.
  • Included patches that in some tests increase the performance of software RAID based on the MD driver by 89%.
  • Support for AMD GPUs based on the RDNA64 microarchitecture has been added for RISCV-3 systems.
  • Added changes to improve stability and performance on SPARC64, Intel Itanium IA-64, and SGI Octane platforms.
  • LibreOffice, OpenJDK and QEMU packages are adapted to work on many secondary architectures.
  • 206 packages and new features were added, 3280 packages were updated, and 37 packages were removed. For example, GCC 14.2, uClibC 1.0.49, LLVM 19.1.5, and the kernel were updated. Linux 6.12.5.
  • Automatic assignment of host name based on hardware platform is provided.
  • The basic package includes the QEMU emulator.
