Release of the GNU IceCat 60.7.0 web browser

GNU project presented new version of web browser Icecat 60.7.0. The release is built on the codebase Firefox 60 ESR, modified in accordance with the requirements for completely free software. In particular, non-free components have been removed, design elements have been replaced, the use of registered trademarks has been discontinued, the search for non-free plug-ins and add-ons has been disabled, and add-ons aimed at enhancing privacy have been integrated.

The base package includes add-ons LibreJS to block processing of non-free JavaScript code, HTTPS Everywhere to use traffic encryption on all sites where possible, TorButton to integrate with the anonymous Tor network (working in the OS requires the launch of the β€œtor” service), HTML5 Video Everywhere to replace the Flash player with an analogue based on the video tag and implement a private browsing mode in which loading resources is allowed only from the current site. The default search engine is DuckDuckGO, with sending requests over HTTPS and without using JavaScript. There is an option to disable the processing of JavaScript and third-party cookies.

By default, the DoNotTrack HTTP header is populated, and the Referer HTTP header always contains the name of the host to which the request is addressed. The following features have been disabled: security checking of opened sites in Google services, Encrypted Media Extensions (EME), telemetry collection, Flash support, search refinement (search suggestions), location API, GeckoMediaPlugins (GMP), Pocket and verification of add-ons by digital signatures. WebRTC has been modified to block internal IP leaks when working through Tor.

Main features of GNU IceCat 60.7.0:

  • The composition includes the ViewTube and disable-polymer-youtube add-ons that allow you to view YouTube videos without enabling JavaScript;
  • Strengthened privacy related settings. Enabled by default: header substitution Referer, isolation of requests within the main domain and blocking the sending of the header Origin;
  • The LibreJS add-on has been updated to version 7.19rc3 (support for the Android platform has appeared), TorButton to version 2.1 (0.1 is indicated in the note, but this is visible typo), while HTTPS Everywhere is 2019.1.31;
  • Improved interface for detecting hidden HTML blocks on pages;
  • Third-party request blocker settings have been changed to allow requests to subdomains of the current page host, well-known content delivery host servers, CSS files, and YouTube resource servers.
