RUSNANO revives Plastic Logic again

It turns out that, contrary to popular belief, you can go into the same river not even twice, but three times. Evil tongues may call it walking on a rake. Optimists, on the other hand, will emphasize the incredible perseverance in achieving once lofty goals. The choice of viewing angle is up to you, our readers. We will just inform you that the Russian corporation RUSNANO for the third time poured some new large and unannounced amounts into a project called "Plastic Logic".

RUSNANO revives Plastic Logic again

What is Plastic Logic? Recall that this is originally a British company that acquired a Bell Labs patent for a technology for the production of thin-film transistors from organic materials. It was supposed that Organic TFT transistors (OTFT) together with E Ink screens would help create an industry for the production of flexible and rollable displays that are easy to read in sunlight (one of the main advantages of E Ink) and also do not consume power during the display of the picture. Alas, almost two decades of improving OTFT technology have not led to commercial success. The project devoured money over and over again, and the working technical process did not exist, and did not appear.

RUSNANO revives Plastic Logic again

By 2010, Plastic Logic was close to bankruptcy. She took $100 million to build a plant in Dresden and got into debt. In 2012 at Plastic Logic for the first time poured money corporation RUSNANO. This project was born "Chubais' tablet". But, it didn't work out. In 2016 RUSNANO poured again money in Plastic Logic and again with no visible result. But it helped Plastic Logic stay afloat. E Ink renegotiated the agreement with Plastic Logic in 2017. A strategic partnership was announced, and again silence, until today E Ink again remembered this developer. It turns out that RUSNANO again invested certain funds in Plastic Logic.

RUSNANO revives Plastic Logic again

As reported in press release E Ink, a factoryless company Plastic Logic HK, a developer and manufacturer of flexible electrophoretic displays (E Ink) based on organic thin-film transistors (OTFT), was recently created by RUSNANO. Tablets are no longer mentioned. Flexible E Ink on OTFT matrices should become the basis of wearable electronics such as fitness bracelets, medical devices and other devices. Interestingly, E Ink is considering supplying color screens for such electronics. Analysts expect the wearables market to grow to $70 billion in 2025. For the sake of this, you can try to revive an interesting, but so far unviable technology. By the way, Plastic Logic HK will not be engaged in production, this task is planned to be assigned to potential partners who will be granted licenses. Will it work this time?
