The state corporation Roscosmos reports that domestic researchers have developed an advanced direction finding method that can be used to determine the location of objects within near-Earth space.

Russian specialists have developed an advanced method of direction finding

Specialists from OKB MPEI (part of the Russian Space Systems holding of the state corporation Roscosmos) took part in the work. We are talking about the phase method, which allows you to simultaneously determine the location and kinematic characteristics of the radiation source of a narrow-band signal and the source of radiation of a wide-band signal. The technology eliminates the influence of interference on the useful signal.

β€œThe useful signal is usually narrowband, and the interference is broadband, and their frequency characteristics are different. Using this difference, it was possible to develop a new method of phase direction finding, which implements the simultaneous direction finding of two radiation sources with different frequency characteristics, ”Roskosmos notes.

The proposed solution involves the use of receivers with three frequency channels. The main one serves to process the signals of both radiation sources. The other two channels only analyze information about the wideband signal.

Thus, it becomes possible to separate data on radiation sources. And this provides high-precision measurements of the coordinates of each of these sources.

The method is already used in the correlation-phase direction finder "Rhythm", which is installed in the Research and Testing Technical Center "Bear Lakes".
