The Russian segment of the ISS will still receive a new greenhouse

Russian researchers will develop a new greenhouse for the International Space Station (ISS) to replace the one lost in 2016. This is reported by the RIA Novosti online publication, referring to the statements of Oleg Orlov, director of the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Russian segment of the ISS will still receive a new greenhouse

Russian cosmonauts have previously conducted a number of experiments aboard the ISS using the Lada greenhouse device. In particular, for the first time in the world it was proved that plants can be grown for a long time, comparable to the duration of a Martian expedition, under space flight conditions without loss of reproductive functions and at the same time form viable seeds.

In 2016, a new-generation Lada-2 greenhouse was to be delivered to the ISS. The device was sent aboard the Progress MS-04 cargo ship, which, alas, crashed. After that, information appeared that it would probably not be possible to create an analogue of Lada-2.

However, it is too early to put an end to the project of a new greenhouse device for the ISS. β€œShe [the Lada-2 greenhouse] really didn’t make it. We decided not to restore it in the form in which it was, because the production time takes time, which means that we will get an outdated scientific instrument. We will create a greenhouse of the next generation, more modern,” said Mr. Orlov.

We also add that a vitamin greenhouse "Vitacycle-T" is being created in Russia. It is assumed that this installation will allow growing lettuce and carrots in space conditions.
