Russia will form a 3D map of the Moon for future manned missions

Russian specialists will create a three-dimensional map of the Moon, which will help in the implementation of future automatic and manned missions. About this, according to RIA Novosti, said the director of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences Anatoly Petrukovich at a meeting of the Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences on space.

Russia will form a 3D map of the Moon for future manned missions

To form a 3D map of the surface of the natural satellite of our planet, a stereo camera installed on board the Luna-26 orbital station will be used. The launch of this device is tentatively scheduled for 2024.

β€œFor the first time, we will use stereo imaging to create a topographic map of the Moon with a resolution of two to three meters. On the plane, this already exists after the work of American satellites, but here we will get a universal map of the heights of the entire Moon with high accuracy using the processing of stereo images and analysis of illumination, ”said Mr. Petrukovich.

In other words, the map will contain information about the relief of the moon. This will allow us to analyze various structures and regions on the surface of the Earth's natural satellite. In addition, the 3D map will help in choosing places for astronauts to land during manned missions.

It is planned to form a complete three-dimensional map of the Moon during the first year of operation of the Luna-26 station.
