Homemade electric car - part 1. How it all began and how I got 1000000 views on youtube

Hi all. My post about a homemade electric car was liked by the community. So, as promised, I will tell you about how it all began and how I got 1 million views on youtube.

Homemade electric car - part 1. How it all began and how I got 1000000 views on youtube

It was the winter of 2008-2009. The New Year holidays have passed, and I decided to finally start assembling something like that. But there were two problems:

  1. I didn’t fully understand what I wanted, there were a lot of thoughts and ideas, but they were either delusional or fell under point 2.
  2. My technological experience was practically zero. Yes, assembling Lego and metal construction sets is better than nothing at all, but it's just a drop in the ocean.

However, I decided to take a chance and started doing. I decided that it would still be some kind of car. True, at that time I didn’t really understand engineering matters, and I decided to do everything as my intuition tells me, as I understand the principles of work and what financial and technical capacities I have.

First of all, I again fell into the nearby construction market. At that time, the primary problem for me was the frame. I understood that I needed something like a frame on which I would already hang all the equipment. For the frame, I chose aluminum alloy shaped tubes - lightweight, easy to machine and, as it turned out, have enough strength not to break under load with the right approach. So, already in the 10th grade, I took up practical classes in strength of materials - according to which I had a double mark for the exam at the university. I chose the first wheels that I liked and that I thought would work fine - and they worked fine, but then I had to take a slightly larger size. Among other things, I took a package of bolts and even any necessary crap.

Returning home, I laid out all the purchases in my room on the floor (yes, I assembled the car at home, thanks to my mother, who, although she drove me with a broom, was not strong, because she understood all this). He laid everything out on the floor, sat down on the bed and looked like a broken trough. The first thought that popped into my head was “What have I gotten myself into????”

After a few days of work, IT turned out:

Yes, it looks like a horror movie. I have one friend, they call Seryoga, even then he said that I was crazy, but nevertheless he helped me in the future, for which he has a separate respect 🙂

So, this frame, of course, was remade several more times, the video of the results will be at the end, already assembled. And yes, yes, yes - I took all the same sleds as a basis, maybe I'm an idiot, but then it seemed very logical to me, and it saved me from a large amount of work. It was necessary to test the idea and spend extra time was not kosher.

The second problem, which turned out to be the main one, but was solved very simply and successfully - which engine to use? I didn’t understand almost anything about internal combustion engines at that time, it seemed to me that it would be very expensive and difficult, such engines could not be stored at home (in any case, gasoline ones - stink and fire hazard), and there is no reason to turn an apartment into a garage. It was decided to use electric traction. Yes, and it is much easier to implement - a battery, a couple of wires and an engine, and all things - that's what I thought then.

I could not find a suitable engine for quite a long time, I used a bunch of options, but they were all weak and low-power (tens of watts, and I needed several hundred watts, in order not just to budge almost a centner of weight - the car and I her, and accelerate at least a little faster than a pedestrian).

And then, very successfully, the washing machine broke down 🙂 And with great pleasure I pulled the engine out of there, it turned out to be just the way I needed it. - can operate on direct current - such as batteries give. This engine, rated power 475 watts, gave out up to 1,5 kilowatts under load, judging by the power consumption. Filmed on 1.3 MP slippers, do not throw tomatoes.

The last problem was just the battery. The engine runs on 240 volts (life-threatening voltage, do not repeat). The batteries I found gave out 6 volts per cell. But they were lead-acid type. And this means that they give out huge power, can hold a high current for a long time, and in general they are not particularly whimsical in maintenance and operation. But as I said - one battery produces 6 volts, the engine ideally needs 240. What should I do? That's right - you need more batteries.

I, blushing and embarrassed, came to my mother to beat with my forehead, she asked how much money I need? I, embarrassed, squeezed out of myself - 5000 rubles (this despite the fact that in 2009 the living wage for a pensioner was 5030 rubles). And I was very surprised when they gave me this money. It was the month of March, the thaw, I came to the market splashing through the puddles.

"Boy, what do you want?"
I need these batteries
- How much do you need?
- Everything I have. And he handed a 5000 bill to the seller, who at that moment almost turned gray.

In short, they simply did not have such a quantity in the store, so a whole box of rechargeable batteries was brought to me by special order in a few days. I already had everything I needed. I spent the whole summer assembling the car, fine-tuning it, adjusting it and tuning it. I wanted to do everything as professionally as possible, but, for obvious reasons, I had to put up with what happened, removing only the mowing places and bringing them to mind. The main task that stood at that time — IT must go.

Autumn came, when I realized that everything was ready for the test - the X day was appointed - October 11, 2009, the day of the first test. I was worried, called several of my friends who helped me, for which I am grateful to them. Yes, at that time we are still small, I’m not even 18 on the video yet

Yes, it looks ridiculous and ridiculous, but it was a good experience, a month later the whole school already knew about me. And yes, this video has gained more than 1000000 views 🙂

It had a special effect that when the views approached 1000000, I hit the peekaboo.

Peekaboo gave a kick effect. Every day after that, my channel collected from 1 to 3 thousand views. And on the day it was posted, almost 20k views.

I think that's all for today. In the next article I will try to tell you more about making money on YouTube, about my experience.
