Huawei and Samsung have reached an agreement on a patent litigation that has lasted for eight years.
Through legal mediation by the Guangdong Higher People's Court, Huawei Technologies and Samsung (China) Investment have reached settlements in a number of infringement disputes regarding SEP (standard-essential patents, industry-wide) patents, according to Chinese press reports.
Details of the settlement agreement are not yet known, but the companies have reportedly agreed on general terms for cross-licensing patents in this category around the world.
As part of the settlement, both companies began to withdraw other lawsuits related to these patents.
The signing of the document marks the end of a protracted legal battle that began in 2011 and included more than 40 litigations.
Once the dominant player in the Chinese smartphone market, Samsung now holds less than 1% of the local market share. During the same period, Huawei has grown into China's largest smartphone supplier and the world's second largest manufacturer, posing a real threat to Samsung's influence in the global smartphone market.
