Samsung, LG, Oppo and Vivo temporarily halt production in India

The crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic is becoming more and more threatening. India, one of China's closest neighbors where the infection originated, is surprisingly not reporting as many cases as Italy or the US. However, the country's government is starting to take serious quarantine measures. Samsung India has also announced the temporary closure of its smartphone manufacturing plant in India as a precaution due to Covid-19 concerns.

Samsung has the largest manufacturing plants in India and one of them is located in Noida in Uttar Pradesh. This facility is closed, albeit only for a couple of days, from 23 to 25 March. This factory produces more than 120 million smartphones every year. The company has also sent employees from its marketing, research and development departments home to work remotely.

“Following the policy of the Government of India, we will temporarily suspend the operation of our Noida plant until the 25th. We will work hard to ensure the continued supply of our products,” a Samsung spokesperson told ZDNet.

Korean LG and Chinese Vivo and OPPO announced similar measures to combat coronavirus - they also temporarily stopped production in India. The official number of coronavirus patients in India has been steadily rising over the past few days as the Indian government began testing more citizens. There are currently 425 confirmed cases, of which 8 have died.
