Samsung improves the efficiency of LEDs for growing plants

Samsung continues to delve into the topic of LED lighting for growing plants in homes and greenhouses. In lighting, LEDs can significantly reduce the cost of paying electricity bills, as well as provide the spectrum necessary for plant growth, depending on the vegetation phase. Moreover, LED lighting opens the way to the so-called vertical cultivationwhen racks with plants are arranged in tiers. This is a relatively new trend in growing greens, which promises a lot of new opportunities, from saving space to the ability to set up a plantation in almost any enclosed space from an apartment to an office and storage sheds.

For the organization of LED lighting for plants, Samsung produces unified modules. Today the company reportedthat it has prepared new solutions with improved photon production efficiency. The 301K (white light) LM5000H modules draw 65mA and are medium power solutions. The new LEDs in the modules were able to emit with an efficiency of 3,1 micromoles per joule. According to Samsung, these are the most efficient LEDs in their class.

By increasing the density of photons emitted by LEDs, each luminaire can use 30% fewer LEDs, saving on lighting equipment costs without sacrificing performance compared to previous modules. By using the same number of LEDs, the illuminating efficiency of the luminaires can be increased by at least 4%, resulting in savings in consumption or improved plant growth.

Each LED measures 3×3 mm. Radiation efficiency is improved due to the new composition of the layer that converts electricity into photons. Also, the design of the LEDs has been improved in such a way as to reduce photon losses inside the LED.
