Samsung will introduce a smartphone with a graphene battery within two years

Typically, users expect new smartphones to improve performance compared to previous models. However, recently one of the characteristics of new iPhones and Android devices has not changed significantly. We are talking about the battery life of devices, since even the use of massive lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 5000 mAh does not significantly increase this parameter.

The situation may change if there is a transition from lithium-ion batteries to graphene-based power sources. According to online sources, the South Korean company Samsung is a leader in the development of a new type of battery. The report suggests that the tech giant could introduce a smartphone with a graphene battery as early as next year, but most likely this will happen in 2021. According to available data, the new type of battery will significantly increase the battery life of devices, and the charging process from 0 to 100% will take less than 30 minutes.

Another benefit of graphene is that it can achieve significantly higher power outputs using the same amount of space as lithium-ion batteries. In addition, graphene batteries, whose capacity is equal to their lithium-ion counterparts, have a much more compact size. Graphene batteries also have a certain level of flexibility, which can be very useful when designing foldable smartphones.

The latest flagships Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ are equipped with batteries with a capacity of 3500 mAh and 4500 mAh, respectively. Samsung engineers believe that the transition to graphene batteries will increase the capacity of mobile devices by 45%. Taking this into account, it is not difficult to calculate that if the mentioned flagships used graphene batteries of identical size to the lithium-ion counterparts involved, then their capacity would be equal to 5075 mAh and 6525 mAh, respectively.
