Samsung patents smartphone with 'multi-plane display'

Network sources report that Samsung has patented a smartphone, the display of which occupies the front and rear planes. At the same time, the cameras of the device are located under the surface of the screen, which makes it absolutely solid. A patent application has been filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent documentation implies that the smartphone will receive a flexible panel that “wraps” the device on one side and continues in the back plane.

The South Korean giant is developing a device with a so-called "multi-plane display". This means that the display will be located on the front and rear planes, and the user will be able to interact with each side. Applications are mentioned in the patent documentation, with the help of which such interaction can be implemented.

The patented smartphone has a screen that is formed from three parts. The entire frontal surface is occupied by the display, which continues in the upper end of the case and captures approximately 3/4 of the back side. To fix the shape of the display, it is fixed in a special bracket. This means that this is not a folding, but a two-sided smartphone.

One of its features is that there is no need for a front camera, since you can take selfies using the main camera. There are several options for placing the main camera. It can be located on the back surface, leave the case in a special module, or be mounted in a hole in the display, similar to how it was done in the Galaxy S10. The patent images show that the manufacturer is considering different camera placement options.

In order for one of the smartphone screens to become active, you need to touch it. The stylus storage compartment is not visible in the images, but it is mentioned in the description. The user will be able to interact with the device not only by touching the fingers, but also through the use of the S Pen stylus, which is used in the Galaxy Note series.

To take a selfie, you can use the main camera, and the result will be visible on the display on the back. If the user shoots another person, then the person being photographed will be able to see what happens in the image. Thus, a kind of preview function is implemented, which allows you to see the result not only for the person taking the picture, but also for the person being photographed.

Another interesting function for which such a display can be used is to conduct international negotiations. If the user does not know the language of the interlocutor, then he can speak his native language with a smartphone, and the device will show the translation on the second screen. Moreover, such a dialogue can be conducted in both directions, which will allow the interlocutors to talk comfortably.

As for the small part of the display located on the end side, it can be used to show alerts and notifications. By dragging a notification from the small screen to the main one, the user will automatically launch the corresponding application.

It is not yet known whether Samsung plans to start production of the device in question. Global trends indicate that in the future, significantly more devices with a two-sided display may appear on the electronics market.
