German smartphone manufacturer Volla has unveiled two rugged mid-range models: the Volla Phone Plinius and the Volla Phone Plinius Plus. Both new models feature the same design and similar specifications. They differ in memory capacity, a reinforced back cover, and the inclusion of pogo pins on the larger Plus model.
The smartphones' bodies are IP68-certified, making them waterproof. They are claimed to be relatively shockproof and feature a high-quality tempered glass screen protector, as well as a replaceable back cover. The 5300 mAh battery can be replaced in a few simple steps. Charging is via USB-C at 30 W or wirelessly at 15 W. However, their modular and robust design makes them relatively thick (10,5 mm) and heavy (230 g).
The company proudly claims that the devices are "made in Germany." However, Notebookcheck suggests that most of the smartphones' components were likely imported.
The smartphones feature 6,67-inch OLED displays with a resolution of 2400 × 1080 pixels, a refresh rate of 120 Hz, and a brightness of 1000 cd/m². A fingerprint scanner is integrated into the display. The new devices are powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, manufactured using a 4-nanometer process technology (four Cortex-A78 cores with a frequency of up to 2,4 GHz and four Cortex-A55 cores with a frequency of up to 2,0 GHz). The chip is equipped with an integrated neural processing unit (NPU).
The smartphones feature a 64-megapixel main camera with an f/1,79 aperture and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with an f/2,2 aperture. The front-facing camera has a resolution of 32 megapixels. The manufacturer claims support for its proprietary Volla AI algorithms for image quality enhancement.
The Volla Phone Plinius and Volla Phone Plinius Plus smartphones are available to order from the manufacturer's official website. The Volla Phone Plinius version with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage is priced at €598, while the Volla Phone Plinius Plus model with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, as well as pogo pins (for connecting accessories) on the reinforced back cover, is priced at €698. Shipments of the Plus model are expected in June. The standard version is already available for purchase. Both smartphones are offered either with Volla OS or with a Android, or with Ubuntu Touch. The manufacturer supplies devices only to European countries and the UK.
